Our guide of where to go, what to see and what to do this weekend.
Father John Misty: Let’s just pretend the weekend starts now. US indie/folk musician Josh Tillman, aka Father John Misty, is in the country for one show this evening at Auckland’s St James Theatre. Known for his time behind the drumkit for Seattle outfit Fleet Foxes, Tillman is now going at it alone, and he’ll be playing tonight in support of his latest LP I Love You, Honeybear. Tickets for the show are still available through Ticketek.
NZ Psych Fest: Some of the country’s best acts are coming together this weekend for the NZ Psych Fest, which is taking place at The Golden Dawn and The Wine Cellar. There’ll be performances from Badd Energy, Bespin, Death and The Maiden, Purple Pilgrims and a bunch more. Find the full timetable here and scoop up presales from Under The Radar.
Yelawolf: Here off the back of his second studio album, Love Story, which was released earlier this year, Alabama rapper Yelawolf arrives in Auckland for a one-off concert tomorrow evening. A huge demand for tickets saw the show get relocated and upsized to The Trusts Arena in Henderson recently, and there’s still some tickets left for both the R18 and R15 areas. Find what you need over at Dash Tickets.
First Thursdays: More proof the weekend’s come early. First Thursdays, which takes place every three months, is back tonight in Auckland, this time with K Rd Stories – a series of 10 short films which will see their premiere throughout 10 different locations on the infamous strip. As usual, there’s plenty more happening too. Here’s your guide.
Oddisee: Washington DC rapper/producer Oddisee is returning to our shores for two shows in Auckland and Wellington over the weekend. This time around, it’s in support of his latest album The Good Fight, which he dropped back in May. He’ll be performing at Neck Of The Woods on Friday before heading to Meow the following evening. Grab tickets right here.
AGEOLD Festival: The 2015 AGEOLD festival takes place this Saturday at Ellen Melville Hall, and as the organisers point out, the philosophy behind the event is simple: “To subvert the tenuous marriage between music and alcohol cultures, and provide a safe environment for audiences of all ages to enjoy the absolute best in alternative music this country has to offer.” Expect sets from Liam Finn, Miss June, New Gum Sarn and way way more. Get your presales from Under The Radar.
Opposite Sex: While they’ll also be playing as part of the NZ Psych Fest and AGEOLD this weekend, Dunedin alternative outfit Opposite Sex also have shows lined up in Gisborne and another in Auckland over the next few days. Expect to hear songs from their recently released album Hamlet, which you can sample below.
