38 coronavirus sufferers are in hospital, including 20 in intensive care.
62 new infections were detected in the past three days, confirming that the second wave of the pandemic has peaked.
All but 62 of the more than 17,000 cases were detected after the borders were reopened in July and mandatory quarantine requirements were abolished in an effort to boost tourism and reignite the economy.
PNG now has 835 cases
Meanwhile Papua New Guinea has reported a new case of Covid-19 case, taking the nation's total to 835.
The latest case was reported in Western Province and is a 42 year old male worker who resides in Tabubil, North Fly district.
He was not showing symptoms of the coronavirus at the time of testing but swab samples returned positive.
PNG has had nine confirmed deaths from the virus.
Thirty-six active cases are in isolation.
