Fiji's commissioner of prisons, Aisea Taoka, has ruled out an amnesty in the near future in the life sentence given to the leader of the November 2000 mutineers, Shane Stevens.
Mr Taoka says the sentence can only be altered if there is a change in the country's governance or national status.
The Fiji Times says the commissioner was responding to reports that a reconciliation team, acting on behalf of the mutineers was planning to visit Stevens and ask for leniency on behalf of him.
Mr Taoka says the last time amnesty was given to prisoners was in 1987 when Sitiveni Rabuka's military government made a recommendation to the president after declaring the country a republic.
