Heavy rain causes flooding in Fiji

12:47 pm on 16 November 2011

Fiji's first bout of bad weather of the official cyclone season has seen flooding and some infrastructure damage.

The senior forecaster from the Fiji Met Service Amit Singh says the weather disturbance is over the Lau group of islands now, after taking a south-east path from Vanua Levu island yesterday.

Mr Singh says there is still tropical pressure over Vanua Levu and the Lau group but says most of the damage was done yesterday.

"In terms of rain there was reports of flooding in Vanua Levu and Viti Levu as well, some of the bridges got damaged, the culvert got washed away."

Amit Singh expects rain over Vanua Levu and the Lau group to gradually ease today.
