Global markets down

Stocks in the United States have fallen, after posting two consecutive weeks of gains that drove indexes to new highs.

The Dow Jones Index on Monday was down 4 points to 12,269. The Nasdaq Composite was up 8 points to 2818

Markets in Europe were also down. The FTSE 100 in London closed down 3 points at 6,060. the DAX in Frankfurt rose 0.3% and the CAC 40 in Paris fell 0.1%.

Across the Tasman, the Australian 200 Index rose 55 points, or more than 1%, to close at 4936. The NZX 50 closed 16 points higher, at 3383.

At 8.15am on Tuesday, the New Zealand dollar was trading at 75.75 US cents, 75.54 Australian cents, 47.24 pence, 63.11 yen and 0.5620 euro. The Trade Weighted Index was at 67.75.

Brent crude oil was trading at $US102.47 per barrel and gold was trading at $US1364.71 per ounce.
