$150m to repair quake-damaged state schools

The Ministry of Education has confirmed it will cost $150 million to repair state schools damaged in the Canterbury earthquakes.

Private or integrated schools are not included.

The total cost to fix the 10 most damaged schools in Christchurch is about $72 million.

The ministry's schools infrastructure policy manager says all schools are back up and running, but some are not on their original sites yet and others need ongoing repairs.

Jerome Sheppard says the extent of those repairs will be dictated by the outcomes of the Royal Commission into the Canterbury Earthquakes, with the possibility of new building standards.

The Post Primary Teacher's Association says it has no complaints over the time taken to fix classrooms.

But the union's president says there is never enough government funding for schools and, in the case of Christchurch, the situation is made worse by the huge amount of repair work that has to be done.

Roin Duff says in many cases, the rebuild has produced positive results for schools, getting new classrooms and new equipment.
