The Papua New Guinea opposition leader, Don Polye, is asking why prime minister Peter O'Neill is not speaking out about police brutality.

Mr Polye says reports of police attacks are happening almost on a daily basis.

He says this week Lae police killed an innocent young man from Mr O'Neill's Southern Highlands province.

Mr Polye says another Southern Highlander was killed by police during a car-chase in Port Moresby.

He says the prime minister should be at the forefront and addressing this issue but he is silent.

The opposition leader says there has to be a change in the culture and resources of the police force to make it the ally and friend of the law-abiding.
