Police are investigating a report of a small sail boat being blown out to sea off Christchurch's Godley Head.
The boat was last seen at 9.30pm on Thursday at Boulder Bay, near Sumner.
It is believed two people were on board.
Police search and rescue teams, the Coast Guard and a helicopter had been searching for the boat.
Police want to hear from anyone with information about who was sailing in the area at the time.
