A magnitude-6.8 earthquake has struck north of Antarctica late this morning but it is not expected to cause a tsunami.

The US Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 98km northeast of Visokoi Island, part of the South Sandwich Islands archipelago.

The quake was very shallow, at a depth of only about 10 km below the seabed.
