2014's most popular baby names

Charlotte and Oliver continue to charm new parents as they keep their place at the top of the country's most popular baby names.

The list released by the Department of Internal Affairs, showed the 100 most popular baby names chosen last year.

For boys, Oliver, Jack and James retained their places in the top three for the second year running.

But Joshua, 2nd in the 2011 list, continued to slide and was now only the 29th most popular name.

For girls, the big mover was Harper, jumping from 19th in 2013 to 8th last year.

Emily, which was second last year, was knocked back to fourth spot.

The top three girl's names were Charlotte, Olivia and Isla.

Lewis and Hayley round out the top 100 both sitting in 100th place.

Internal Affairs said more than 12,000 unique names were chosen by new parents last year.
