Shipwreck champagne sold at auction

16:38 pm on 4 June 2011

A bottle of champagne found in a shipwreck at the bottom of the Baltic Sea has been sold at auction in Finland for 30,000 euros ($US43,630), making it the most expensive wine ever auctioned.

More than 140 champagne bottles were recovered from a sunken schooner between Finland and Sweden, last year, after almost two centuries underwater.

They are said to be in exquisite condition and are believed to have been being transported to the court of Tsar Nicholas of Russia.

The champagne was bought by an internet bidder from Asia.
