Auckland sets a rail record in March

17:47 pm on 29 April 2014

More people in Auckland are using public transport with a record month for rail in March.

The Auckland Council says 7.3 million public transport trips took place last month, up 4 percent compared to the same time last year.

In the year to March, the council says rail use increased by 14 percent to over 11 million trips.

Auckland Transport's group manager of public transport Mark Lambert says the growth is due to more trains running on time, a better ticketing system and interest sparked by yesterday's introduction of electric trains.

The council says Northern Express buses also had a record month and the use of other bus services is up by 3 percent to 52 million passengers in the year to March.
