One person is in a serious condition in Hawke's Bay Hospital after a suspected attack by a pit bull.

Emergency services and animal control were called to a Hastings property on Wednesday afternoon shortly before 3pm after two people were injured.

Hawke's Bay Today is reporting the attack injured two children, one of them seriously.

Hato Hone St John said one person was transported to hospital in a serious condition.

The ambulance service and police declined to comment on the age of the people injured.

Animal control said a dog has been impounded after police asked for their help in removing it from a Hood St address at about 3.30pm.

Animal control said the dog - suspected to be a pit bull cross - was not currently registered but had been previously.

It said the matter was in the hands of the police and the outcome for the dog was yet to be decided.
