Double-decker bus service begins in Auckland

22:14 pm on 6 March 2013

A double-decker commuter bus is on the road in Auckland on Wednesday morning as part of a push to boost patronage.

The 88-seat bus was built in Malaysia. With a dozen standing, it can carry 20 passengers more than the biggest buses on the northern busway and take up less space on the road.

Ritchies Transport says the double decker starts next regular trips week and will be followed by 20 more over the next 18 months.

Two other operators are also considering double deckers. A second route to east Auckland is being evaluated and could be in use in a year.
