Pipeline attack reported in Nigeria

13:43 pm on 11 July 2009

A rebel group in Nigeria says it has blown up an oil pipeline operated by Chevron recently repaired after a previous attack.

The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said it had targeted a pipeline linking Alero creek to a Chevron terminal in Delta state.

The BBC reports attacks in the Niger Delta have severely cut Nigeria's oil output.

Mend said it blew up the pipeline at about 1900 GMT on Friday. However, there was no immediate confirmation.

The pipeline was previously hit in May. Chevron said its output was cut by 100,000 barrels per day.

Oil production in Nigeria has been cut by a third because of attacks by rebels over the past three years.
