State Highway One beside Lake Taupo is closed after a fatal crash.
Police say a car drove into a tree just south of Hapete, just before 5am on Monday.
A section of the highway is blocked and will remain closed for about two hours.
Diversions are in place at Turangi, for northbound traffic, and at Pohipi Road for those traveling south.
