One of New Zealand's most prominent businessmen, Chris Liddell, has resigned as General Motors' chief financial officer.

Chris Liddell has announced he will leave the role next month, and will be replaced internally by another New Zealander, Dan Ammann.

During his 15 months with General Motors, Mr Liddell guided the carmaker through a record $US23 billion stockmarket listing.

Mr Liddell, who was passed over for the top job at General Motors last year, says he hasn't decided what he will do after he leaves but he's pleased with what he has achieved and is delighted to be handing over to another New Zealander.

Mr Ammann was born in New Zealand, educated at the University of Waikato and subsequently worked at Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse.
