Constitution Commission would be unconstitutional, Fiji tells UN

19:40 pm on 19 March 2015

Fiji's Attorney General has told the United Nations Human Rights Council that establishing a Constitution Commission to review the 2013 constitution would breach the constitution.

Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was presenting Fiji's response to the recommendations from its universal periodic review late last year, where establishing a constitution commission was among the recommendations.

But Mr Sayed-Khaiyum says the constitution outlines a process to be followed before any changes can be made, saying any other mechanism would breach the constitution.

Fiji has accepted 14 of the UPR's 40 recommendations, including ratifying the International Covenant Against Torture and establishing a legislative framework to address violence against women.

But it also rejected recommendations that include repealing the media decree.
