20:33 pm on 14 April 2014

The hunter who died after he was shot in the chest in western Southland on Sunday has been named.

He was 25-year-old Adam David Hill, a local dairy farmer and father of two.

A police spokesperson said Mr Hill was hunting with a friend when he was shot by someone from another hunting group in the Longwoods Forest.

Mr Hill's friend walked for hours out of the bush to raise the alarm, and a medic from Te Anau was winched into the heavily bushed area by helicopter just after 1.30pm.

The man had suffered a bullet wound to the chest and had died at the scene.

A post-mortem was conducted on Monday morning and the police investigation was continuing, the spokesperson said.
