The brother of a man facing serious sexual assault charges in Canada has appeared in court charged with making false statements in order to get him a passport.

Kevin Farley, 42 , appeared in Palmerston North District Court on Thursday charged with writing false information on the passport photo his brother used to leave New Zealand.

His brother Michael Farley cut off his electronic bracelet while on home detention in 2011 and fled to Canada, where he has since been charged with several offences including beating and kidnapping a 42-year-old woman.

Kevin Farley was remanded on bail to appear in court again on 11 April.

He was banned from contacting his brother and from leaving the Manawatu region.
