Man 'violently' assaults officer while resisting arrest, both fall through window - police

A man has been arrested after police say he violently resisted arrest and assaulted an officer.

Police were called to family harm incident at a liquor store on Great South Road, Epsom just after 7.24pm.

Senior Sergeant Megan Dalton says the 41-year-old man "violently resisted police throughout the incident" as officers tried to take him into custody.

"He continued to resist arrest, and while an officer was attempting to physically restrain the man, both fell through a large glass window.

"At this point, the man continued to violently assault the officer while on the ground."

Both the man and the officer suffered cuts. The officer had cuts to his face, an arm and leg and was taken to Middlemore Hospital, the man was taken to Auckland Hospital under guard.

The man has since been charged with two counts of threatening to kill, two counts of assaulting police, assaulting a person in a family relationship, resisting police and impedes breathing.

He was to appear in the Auckland District Court on Wednesday.
