The biennial Lee Kwan Yew World City Prize is worth nearly $300,000.

Past winners include Bilbao (2010), New York (2012) and China's Suzhou (2014).

Former Waitakere City mayor Sir Bob Harvey will present the case for Auckland in Singapore, and said the judges would whittle the entrants down to a shortlist over coming months.

He said the prize covers social, environmental and economic progress and would boost Auckland's global recognition.
