It is a wet start to the New Year for parts of the South Island, with a heavy rain warning in place for North Otago, Dunedin and Clutha.
The MetService says up to 140 millimetres of rain could fall before tomorrow morning, which may cause slips and streams and rivers to rise rapidly, making driving conditions hazardous.
The rain may spread to inland areas between South Canterbury and northern Southland.
The low is expected to inch over the North Island Island tomorrow, with heavy falls in central and northern areas.
