A new ministerial portfolio has been created to replace the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA).

The new portfolio, Greater Christchurch Regeneration, signals the disestablishment of CERA.

Prime Minister John Key said he still had confidence in Gerry Brownlee, who remains the minister in charge.

"He's got a difficult job. On the one hand he needs to make sure we deliver those anchor projects, because they're important - from the metro sports centre right through to the convention centre - but on the other side of the coin he also has to take responsibility of getting value for money for tax payers and delivering assets that the Christchurch people actually want."

The government was moving more towards a supporting role and the change in portfolio reflected that, Mr Key said.

Nicky Wagner remains the Associate Minister.
