Police have confirmed an elderly woman's body has been recovered from flood waters north of Hokitika.
Police are at the scene at Arahura Valley, north of Hokitika. The woman's body was pulled from flood waters at about 9.19am.
Police said it appeared that the woman got out of the vehicle she was driving and tried to cross the flood waters on foot.
They said she was then swept away in the strong-flowing current of surface flooding on Arahura Valley Road.
Police are investigating and her death has been referred to the coroner.
