The first test restaurant on Auckland's North Shore would be cashless and customers would order burgers, milkshakes and ice-cream sundaes through a kiosk.

BurgerFuel chief executive Josef Roberts said if successful, it would establish the restaurant chain elsewhere in New Zealand.

Mr Roberts said the company had previously announced its intention to establish other brands in the New Zealand market.

"We saw a gap in the market, as well as an opportunity within our skill set to create a new concept that could deliver simple, premium burgers at speed, without compromising on the overall customer experience.

"We believe the Shake Out concept will be highly complementary to the BurgerFuel brand."

BurgerFuel posted a net loss of $463,000 in the financial year ended March, after it incurred costs associated with exiting the United States market.

In June, the company said it had no debt and cash reserves of $6.3 million.
