John Key is travelling to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly next week.

Passengers on the Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Houston were told it would have to divert to Tahiti because of a passenger's medical condition.

The condition of the patient is unknown.

The plane was in Papeete for an hour before resuming its journey.

Air New Zealand said the plane was expected to be about half an hour late into Houston, arriving early this afternoon.
