Fiji Sugar Cane Growers Council wants Corporation to back down over rail use

14:35 pm on 17 March 2004

The Sugar Cane Growers council says it won't allow the Fiji Sugar Corporation to unilaterally decide that farmers can't use the railway system to transport cane.

The council's chief executive, Jaganath Sami, says under the master award, the FSC is required to do so.

The Penang mill in Rakiraki, which is one of four run by the FSC, told growers that they would have to transport this year's crop by truck because the company didn't have the funds to repair the rail system.

Mr Sami says a boycott of the harvest is the last option but the council and its farmers wants the FSC to adhere to procedures.

"There was an unanimous decision taken that we will not allow the miller to unilaterally impose any draconian measures that they want to implement, such as stopping the transportation of cane by rail"

Mr Sami says he's written to the FSC and is waiting for an official response.

He says if the corporation maintains its stance, he will report the matter to the Sugar Tribunal which has the powers to declare it a dispute.
