Wage tax signed into law in American Samoa

12:16 pm on 24 March 2011

American Samoa's governor, Togiola Tulafono, has signed into law legislation imposing a new 2-percent wage tax to be paid by all wage earners in the territory.

The government is looking at collecting around 3-point-1 million US dollars under this new law, which took effect this week and is valid until the end of this year.

Togiola informed lawmakers that he appreciates the Fono's assistance in approving this measure.

He says the administration is continuing to seek ways to increase revenue collections and decrease expenses to cover the projected shortfalls in local revenues, for the current fiscal year.
