Pride flags have been stolen from around Queenstown ahead of the start of Winter Pride.

The annual festival celebrating the Rainbow community starts on Thursday.

The theft of the flags, which had been removed from poles around Queenstown Bay and the Village Green sometime in the past week, was reported to police on Wednesday.

Sergeant Steve Watt said it was disappointing, as it has occurred right before Winter Pride began.

"While we can't know the motive for removing these flags until we have identified those responsible, we know how frustrating it is for the organisers of this vibrant festival that injects a real boost to our city," Watt said.

"We're keen to hear from anyone who might have information about this theft, or who knows who is responsible."

Anyone who had information should contact police on the 105 service.
