Six senators in American Samoa have sponsored a bill that regulates the habit and
practice of smoking in certain public and private places, similar to one pending in the House.
Called the "American Samoa Smoke Free Environment Act," the measure states that the owner of a public place, such as a restaurant, sports arena, or theatre, may designate a smoking area in the premises but smoking is strictly prohibited in buses, taxis, public areas of retail stores and lobbies of financial institutions.
The bill provides penalties, ranging from $50 to $200, against those who violate the act.
