It is 4306 doses short, or at about 70 percent of where it aims to be.

The Rotorua lakes district is the next worse on 81 percent, with Wairarapa (82 percent), South Canterbury (88 percent), Hawke's Bay (93 percent), Tairāwhiti (98 percent), Waikato (98 percent) and Auckland (96 percent) all also falling short.

Health Minister Chris Hipkins says Northland set itself quite an ambitious goal.

"At the moment they are not hitting that target so we will work with them about what we can do to up those numbers.

"Do they need need extra resource, can we work with other DHBs to lend them extra resourece if they need.

"We know that that Northland population does include some of the most vulnerable people who we do want to see vaccinated."

Hipkins says, overall, the country is slightly ahead of its vaccination target.
