Could this be the greatest concert in the world? Or will it be just a tribute?

Rock band Tenacious D, who modestly call themselves the 'Greatest Band That Ever Played on Planet Earth' will be performing two shows in Aotearoa this July.

The concerts, in Auckland and Wellington respectively, will be the band's first performances in New Zealand since 2013.

Tenacious D, fronted by actor Jack Black and Kyle Gass, formed in 2011. They're best-known for their 2011 single, 'Tribute', a song they wrote after discussing whether Metallica's 'One' was the greatest song in the world.

The pair, who have also parlayed the band's comic rock genius into albums, cameos in music videos by other bands, television series and a feature film, met as young actors in Los Angeles.

Aside from his music career with Tenacious D, 54-year-old Black is an Emmy Award-winning actor. He's currently in New Zealand filming the new Minecraft film with Jason Momoa and Jennifer Coolidge.

Tickets to the New Zealand shows on 'The Spicy Meatball Tour' are on general sale from Friday 9 February.
