Sheraton strikers appear in Fiji court

18:46 pm on 10 January 2014

Six people who took part in the Sheraton Fiji strike on New Year's Eve have appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court.

FBC News says those taken into custody include the general secretary of the National Union of Hospitality Catering and Tourism Industries, Daniel Urai.

About 300 employees at the Sheraton hotels in the Nadi area took part in the one-day strike, which the labour minister declared as unlawful because it breached Section 175 of the Employment Relations Act.

Although the strike was said to be illegal, Fiji media say the hotel management agreed to pay those workers who were on strike.
