Tamariki from 32 kura met at a west Auckland stadium on Wednesday to play the ancient Maori ball game of ki o rahi.
Played on a circular field, the game and involves throwing a ball at posts to score points, and the inter-school competition at Trusts Stadium drew pupils from throughout the city.
Teacher Ana Hokopaura and her pupils from Glenfield Intermediate say it's a fun, fast moving game - with a lot of running and both teams on the attack.
A number of other traditional Maori games were discussed in workshops, including mu torero, which has been likened to a form of Maori chess.
