A hit and run crushed a Napier woman against a tree, leaving her in intensive care with critical injuries yesterday.
Police said a car drove into the front yard of a property on Wyatt Ave in Onekawa and smashed the woman into a tree at about 6pm yesterday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Sally Patrick said the car then drove off, but they found the Mazda Astina involved in the incident on nearby Dockery Ave.
They were still looking for the driver, who fled the scene, she said.
Police believe that in the moments before the woman was struck, the driver crashed into vehicles parked on Wyatt Ave and Roberts Terrace, Patrick said.
The victim is now in a stable condition in the intensive care unit at Hawke's Bay Hospital.
"Police and the Serious Crash Unit are investigating the incident and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident, or has surveillance cameras that overlook any of the streets involved," Patrick said.
