Asia Pacific Airlines terminates mail contract to central Pacific

10:11 am on 7 July 2005

Asia Pacific Airlines has announced it will stop carrying mail to the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia and Guam in a fortnight.

The move is also expected to disrupt some longline tuna exports.

APA says skyrocketing fuel prices, high fuel taxes in the Marshall Islands, low mail volumes, and difficult U.S. government agencies have forced their decision.

The president of APA Mike Quinn says APA was contracted to deliver mail by Continental, who has a contract with the US Postal Service.

Quinn said that APA planes will still fly to Majuro and Pohnpei to pick up fresh tuna for export to Japan but these flights will no longer have mail unless there is a new mail deal.
