A slip at the Waikare Gorge between Napier and Wairoa is blocking State Highway 2.
It is expected to block the road for the rest of the day.
Photos show a pile of rocks and earth covering both lanes.
Waka Kotahi says the highway was closed between Putorino and Kotemaori just before 4am Sunday, and there is no detour available.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area or delay their travel.
