Magpie takes out power supply to 7000 Wairarapa homes after flying into transformer

Power has been restored to most of the 7000 homes in Wairarapa that were without electricity earlier today after a magpie flew into a transformer.

The bird strike affected power to homes in Greytown, Martinborough and surrounding areas in Wairarapa.

A spokesperson for Transpower says the grid fault has been restored.

However, it is taking some time for that to flow through.

Powerco's website shows just over 3500 homes in Martinborough are still without power.

It should be restored by 1pm.
