London impresses IOC boss

07:34 am on 28 July 2011

London has been given a big tick by the IOC president Jacques Rogge who has put their Olympic preparations on a par with the great games of the past.

Rogge said he was visually shocked by the uniqueness of the Aquatics Centre with its undulating wave-shaped roof and an underside resembling the belly of a whale.

He also marvelled at the quality of the Olympic Stadium and the Velodrome, and in terms of general readiness a year out from the Games, Rogge put London on a par with Sydney 2000 and Beijing in 2008.

A quarter of a million people have applied to be among the 70,000 volunteers for the Games.
