Pipitea Marae in Wellington says it has helped more than 100 overseas tourists caught up in Tuesday's earthquake in Christchurch.

An iwi liaison officer, Ben Ngaia, says travellers from Europe, India and Canada have been through the marae since it opened its doors to stranded tourists on Wednesday.

He says most have lost their passports and other travel documents.

About 40 people stayed at the marae on Thursday night, Mr Ngaia says - many arriving with just the clothes they were wearing when the quake struck.

Mr Ngaia says accommodation in private houses is also available for tourists not used to the communal nature of the marae.

He expects to see more Christchurch residents taking up offers of accommodation in the next few days.
