Playwright, poet and actor Uther Dean responded to a quarter-life crisis this year by directing a production of Joseph K, a modern adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial, at Wellington’s BATS Theatre.
Uther has a Masters’ Degree in scriptwriting and, along with Hannah Banks and Paul Waggott, formed the critically-acclaimed My Accomplice theatre collective in late 2009.
Their production A Play About Space, which Uther wrote and directed, took out the Best Theatre award at the Dunedin Fringe Festival earlier this year.
In the interests of full disclosure – if it isn’t obvious from the in-jokes and sassy comebacks – The Wireless producer Elle Hunt co-edited Victoria University’s student magazine, Salient, with Uther in 2011.
She asked him if staging Joseph K was a conscious move to show that My Accomplice is more than just ‘The Uther Show’.
