The official tourism body in the Northern Marianas says the legalisation of marijuana there could affect the islands' image as a family friendly destination.

The chair of the Marianas Vistors Authority, Marian Aldan-Pierce, said cannabis was still considered an illicit drug in many of the CNMI's source markets.

She said since marijuana was still illegal federally, the United States Customs and Border Protection had advised that any visitor who told them they were entering the CNMI to use marijuana would be banned from re-entry.

Ms Aldan-Pierce said that while Canada had legalised marijuana, Japan and China had cautioned their people about it.

Last September, CNMI Governor Ralph Torres enacted a law which legalises and controls marijuana use in the Northern Marianas.
