Woman's body found at Haast

20:36 pm on 20 September 2013

Police searching for a missing Canadian couple in Westland have found a woman's body on the beach near Haast.

The body could be that of Joanna Lam, but that will not be confirmed until formal identification has been completed.

Searchers have not found any sign of her partner, Connor Hayes.

The two were last seen at Fox Glacier last Tuesday and police believe their campervan was swept into the Haast River by a slip on SH 6.

Wreckage of the van and personal property were found earlier in the river.

Connor Hayes, 25, and Joanna Lam, 24, were last seen in Fox Glacier a week ago.

The chassis of the couple's car was removed from the Haast River on Thursday.

Formal identification will now take place but Miss Lam's next of kin have been notified.
