Bad forecast for week one at Wimbledon

07:09 am on 20 June 2011

Rafael Nadal could become the first player to begin the defence of his Wimbledon tennis title under cover, with rain forecast for three of the first four days of the fortnight long championship.

The All England club's 160-milion dollar sliding roof could finally start to earn its keep this year with light showers forecast for tonight and Thursday night, and heavy showers predicted for Wednesday night.

But organisers have been quick to stress that Wimbledon remains an outdoor, daytime event.

Nadal's first round opponent is the unseeded American Michael Russell.

That match will be followed by the defending womens champion Francesca Schiavone against Australia's Jelena Dokic.
