A Northland driver who jumped into a river to escape police last week has turned up safe and well.
The man led patrol cars on a 70 kilometre chase last Thursday night after he was pulled over for speeding in Whangarei, then took off.
He drove over two sets of road spikes, fled on foot and was last seen dog-paddling down the swollen Manghakahia River in the dark.
Inspector Wayne Ewers said the man's family had been in touch to say he survived his swim, and police expect to speak to him very soon.
