The man was due to return from his trip on Sunday afternoon and efforts to find him yesterday were unsuccessful.

Coastguard from Ōpōtiki, Whakatāne, and Maketū as well as an RNZAF Orion are searching in the Tōrere sea area this morning.

Police are also asking the public in the area to report any sightings of items of interest, including a 100-litre white chilly bin, a red tote tank, wooden oars and a yellow life jacket.

Anyone who comes across any of these items is asked to call police on 105, quoting file number 220418/0391.
