32,000 Whanau Ora families 'off support'

19:48 pm on 30 May 2014

The Government says after three years, 32,000 Whanau Ora families now no longer need the support.

It says about 8000 families are still part of the social care concept.

Director of Whanau Ora at Te Puni Kokiri Di Grennell said there was evidence of families who were now equipped to go it alone.

She said there were indications of whanau who were now self-managing their plans.

Ms Grennell said Te Puni Kokiri expected that many families would and should go and be self-responsible.

Whanau Ora Minister Tariana Turia said the Maori-designed approach was transformative.

She said the Crown had spent 30 years delivering mainstream social services to particular families, and they had not made one iota of difference.
