French Polynesia's pro-independence Tavini Huiraatira party has downplayed claims by the anti-independence Tahoeraa Huiraatira that the two will run jointly in the municipal elections in March.
The Tahoeraa leader Gaston Flosse said joint lists were being drawn up in many communes to challenge the Tapura Huiraatira, which is the dominant party.
However, the Tavini said there is no alliance but what it calls an opening.

The party said co-operation needs to be based on six principles.
They include support for the 2013 reinscription of French Polynesia on the UN decolonisation list and support for a decolonisation process.
The party also demands support for its complaint against living French presidents lodged with the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity over France's nuclear weapons tests.
While the Tavini and the Tahoeraa were rivals for decades, they briefly formed an alliance in 2007 which saw Gaston Flosse regaining the presidency in 2008.
