Invercargill police are considering further charges following the death of a woman who was seriously assaulted earlier this month.

Teri-Anne McKenzie, 48, received critical injuries in the assault on Mavora Crescent on 10 December.

She died overnight in Christchurch Hospital, Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy said in a statement.

A 51-year-old man was arrested and charged in relation to the incident and police have now launched a homicide investigation and are considering further charges, McCloy said.

"She was a much-loved mother and daughter, and we are working to support her family at this extremely difficult time," McCloy said.

Police would not be making further comment as the matter was before the courts, he said.
